Play what you love

“Play what you love.” It is the best guitar playing tip I’ve ever got.

It is the most important thing that you have to do. Don’t try to play music that you don’t like. There are many people who will play it, you don’t have to. Find what  really resonates with you. Music that stirs your emotions, gets you goosebumps. That’s the right music for you. Don’t try to impress anyone, play because you love it. Don’t compare to others. Try to be the best that you can be. That’s all.

If you don’t like jazz, don’t play it. If you love it, do it with all your might. There is no need to play something that you don’t love from the bottom of your heart. People won’t believe you, don’t pretend. Be yourself. If three chords are enough for you, play three.

Dig really deep and find what is your thing, your calling. When you find it, work at it until it’s perfect. Every note, every word, every detail. You will know when you are ready

Don’t let anybody discourage you. You know it is right for you.

You are not perfect. You will make mistakes. Probably many. The more, the better. Learn from them. Improve your thinking. Mistakes are your opportunities to learn. Learn well.

When it gets tough, relax for a while and then keep on working. See the big picture. All the reasons why you are doing what you are doing. Find that feeling of excitement that got you started. That’s your endless source of inspiration and motivation. Cultivate it.

You will get there. Promise it to yourself. You deserve it.
